Looking at their backgrounds, you might wonder if Beth McConnell and Stefani Zellmer were destined to go into business together. Both spent the better part of their careers in Los Angeles and New York working for the advertising industry’s most notable firms: Chiat/Day, The Martin Agency, Ogilvy & Mather, BBDO, Kirshenbaum & Bond, Messner Vetere, Crispin, Porter & Bogusky and Lowe Worldwide, where they both worked, coincidentally, but never met until they were recruited to Austin by GSD&M.
After years of working at GSD&M on the same accounts—Walmart, Southwest Airlines, Norwegian Cruise Line, World Market and AT&T— they went their separate ways but forged similar paths. Beth started her own design firm, Ten Miles West, and Stefani co-founded The Swizzle Collective with her husband before spinning off to form her own firm, Zeehive.
When Stefani, a writer, needed an art director to partner up with on the Mothers’ Milk Bank account, she called Beth. And because they grew up in the same world of high-pressure creative departments, they just spoke the same language when it comes to creating great work. Shortly thereafter, they merged their agencies and rebranded as Zellmer McConnell, where they continue to service their shared clients and have built a roster of new ones. Beloved ones. In order to foster this atmosphere of Collaborativity, we abide by the principle that egos create obstacles in a game nobody wins. Under this philosophy we’ve built a roster of dream clients, clients who feel comfortable adding to the creative, making it better, and clients who aren’t afraid to be innovative, sometimes even a bit risky.
If we have a niche, it’s the niche of being synergistic with clients in a way most agencies aren’t. We know this to be true because we’ve worked at so many of them. Each of our Chief Creative Officers has 20+ years experience at some of the biggest, most renowned agencies in the country. In that time, we’ve seen what works. And we’ve seen too much of what doesn’t.
Designing our agency around the concept of Collaborativity, we fell in love all over again with the process of creating great advertising. It truly is fun for us to breathe new life into our clients’ brands. We certainly hope that spirit shows in the work that we do.
